We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Spring Branch-Memorial Library.
The Library has a rich history of serving the community. Its origins date back to 1950, when the library first opened its doors at Saint Francis Episcopal Church. As the neighborhood grew, so did the need for more space. In 1959, Harris County purchased a small house for the library, relocating it to 900 Corbindale Road, on the site of one of the county’s voting machine storage areas. While this expansion provided much-needed room and a meeting space (formerly the house’s garage), it quickly became apparent that a larger facility was necessary. In 1962, the Friends of the Spring Branch Memorial Library was formed to support and advocate for the library. Over the next few years, the group launched the campaign for a new replacement. Along the way, Friends picked up the support from the Village Mayors and City Councils, as well as the County Judge and County Commissioner Court. Construction of the new $358,000 library branch began in January 1975, with the official dedication of the new building on November 22, 1975. The new 10,000 square -foot facility housed 51,000 books and featured air conditioning, a student reference center and a general meeting room for civic programs.
